Oxymetholone:
Basic information and history
Oxymetholone
is a popular and quite famous drug that is often used by those looking to gain
size and strength, usually before a competition. Its origins date back to the
middle of the 20th century, where it was first implemented in medical circles
as a method of treatment for conditions that had a profound impact on muscle
mass, such as HIV or cancer. It was also used to help treat certain blood
disorders, such as anemia.
However,
like all of these chemicals that started out either in research or medical
practices, it steadily made its way into the regimes of some athletes and a lot
of bodybuilders because of its potent and rapid-acting nature.
The item gets its immense potency from the chemical change it has undergone. Namely, the addition of a methyl chemical group to the alpha area at the 17th carbon point of its structure, making it a c17-alpha-alkylated chemical. Considering that it's also a DHT derivative, it is a very potent product.
Mechanisms
of action and common uses
The basic
action of Oxymetholone is the same as any anabolic steroid. It exerts its
impact on the body through mixing with certain androgen receptors in the body, in
order to produce a substantial shift in molecular signaling within the targeted
cells, which the selves cause a change in the global effects around the body.
From a practical standpoint, this means a greater amount of muscle production,
and retention, is caused. There is also a large increase in erythrocyte
production.
However,
some may be confused by a high potential for estrogen-mediated negative
outcomes, without a high affinity for conversion to estrogen. This is because,
as with many DHT-based compounds, Oxymetholone has the potential to combine
directly with estrogen receptors, and therefore cause some of the undesirable
effects associated with it, that are discussed in further detail below.
Also, due
to Oxymetholone being a more direct form of DHT, instead of the more usual
compounds that are partially converted into DHT following administration, it
also has a higher risk of incurring androgenic-mediated events for the user,
also discussed in further detail in the sections below.
However,
due to the large magnitude of mass, and the concurrent estrogenic effects
elicited by the use of Oxymetholone, it is a useful choice for recreational or
sporting users who are looking to gain as much as overall size, and the gains
in force and power capacity therein, in a short period of time. This is why it
is so commonly used by experienced athletes or recreational users who are
familiar with such anabolics and are looking for a way to accelerate the
outcomes of the use of similar drugs, or during a short period of use where
rapid gains are desired or needed.
Regardless, once the decision to employ Oxymetholone into ones regime is made, the next most important factors are dose and how it is commonly taken. This is why we examine both of these aspects in the section below.
Dosing
and administration
The tablet
form of Oxymetholone means administration of it in your program needs a little explanation.
It is a relatively easy, quick, and convenient method of administration and
concerns mainly taking the item orally, with a glass of water, and on an empty
stomach, in order to maximize potential absorption and subsequent utilization
by the body.
However, it
should also be noted that the commonly reported doses of 50 to 100 milligrams
each day (for male users) is normally distributed over 2-3 administrations in a
given day. Meanwhile, while it is highly recommended that female users avoid
Oxymetholone, some have reported using it at an amount of 25 milligrams daily.
This is usually done for a period of 4 to 6 weeks to reap the benefits, while minimising the drawbacks of its use. The dosing is not always static either, as many report that the best effects often plateau after a period of 2 weeks, many users choose to grade up their dose up from 50 milligrams to 1 tablet per week. While some may report better outcomes with this practice, the lack of formal research makes it difficult to ascertain if that's truly the case or not.
Negative
effects and safety
As mentioned above, the relatively unique mechanisms of action of Oxymetholone means that, while potent and fast-acting, it is also well-known for coming with a host of potential, unwanted concurrent effects for the user. These may include more common issues like:
- The suppression and possible
cessation of endogenous testosterone manufacturing, meaning you'll need to add
a testosterone product to your program to prevent deficiency-related problems
- Increase in heart size and reduced
flexibility of the blood vessel walls, and higher blood pressure all of which
can increase the risk of cardiac events
- Androgenic-mediated events like skin
problems, acne, and acceleration of balding in genetically at-risk individuals,
and potential formalizing effects in women users
There are
also more relatively unique issues caused by Oxymetholone, due to its chemical
structure and alterations, which include:
- Hepatic strain, and potential
hepatic damage after long-term use
- Development of excessive tissue
around the breasts in males, known as gynecomastia
- Water and adipose tissue buildup
with use
- Increased risk of liver and prostate
cancer
- Thyroid dysfunction
- Nausea and vomiting are also
possible
These call
for the consideration of certain Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulators, or
SERMs, like Nolvadex or Clomid, and 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor, like
Finasteride, to be added to your regime, in order to help prevent and manage
some of these symptoms.
Meanwhile, the use of the above-mentioned items in a Post
Cycle Therapy program, along with HCG, after its use has ended, is advised to
help speed up the rate at which the body starts endogenously manufacturing
testosterone again.
This can
not only help solidify the progress that you’ve made throughout the period of
time you were carrying out your regime, but also make the following weeks to
months a lot more manageable and enjoyable, as well as lay a foundation for a
more successful, sustainable, and consistent phases.
